For Efficient Straining

Posted: 30 Nov 2011 01:11 AM PST

I fancy this particularly thoughtful strainer that attaches to any pan or dish at its rim and drains off the liquid without letting any solids slip away. Crafted from silica gel, the Food Filter comes in different sizes and drains, fitting almost any size pans and for multiple purposes.

The Ultimate Green Hotel

Posted: 30 Nov 2011 01:01 AM PST

The Urban Hotel is a very well thought-out solar-powered 'green' hotel. It features rainwater recycling system and a bicycle in each room, to help visitors explore the city. Now the cool thing here is that there is a specific slot in the room to place the bike and you can use it as an exercise cycle. Stored kinetic energy from it gets converted to electricity and helps power small gadgets and lights. If you get enthusiastic enough, for all you know, you could end up renting the room for free! Apparently all your pedaled miles get converted to energy savings and can be redeemed against the room rent. Sweet!

Symbiotic Facade

Posted: 30 Nov 2011 12:03 AM PST

The team at in square lab noticed that the Historical Pushinsky Cinema is in need of a major facelift- one that will not only reinvigorate the architecture but also one that will revitalize its presence as a focal point of central Moscow. Their corian & glass recladding proposal is seen as a solid cellular structure that grows, at first scarcely from the square onto the steps & then gradually covering parts of the facade, constantly revealing glimpses of the building’s history.

Rather than erasing the existing building, the proposed scheme celebrates the tension and co-existence between the retained and the changed through strategic use of form, light, space and material. Corian is chosen as the facade material in view to achieve a seamless organic fluidity of amalgamation between the rigid (representing the past) and the fluid (indicating a new future).

The merging of this new solid structure into the light transparent glass facade generates a sense of playfulness while inclusive and inviting the public arena. Numerous 'celluar holes' within the new intervention also creates transient light qualities that will change throughout the day as the light washes over the surfaces.

Endless Expression of Information

Posted: 30 Nov 2011 12:02 AM PST

For 350 years the Unversitylibrary Breman has organized and structured information to make it accessible to visitors. As you can imagine, the library has been witness to the incredible evolution of information sharing from paper to digital. To celebrate, this installation titled Wandern im Wissen (Wandering in Knowledge) serves as a representation of the endless flow of shared thought over the years. Hit the jump to catch a detailed vid of the process!

In the center of the 15 meters high stairway a sculpture of folded paper demonstrates the connection between the traditional storage medium and the digital information world. The permanent flow of information inquiries at the SuUB runs through on a vertical axis between four floors of the building. The random results of the inquiries release corresponding visuals of text and pictures which cause curiosity for the various activites in the library. The media sculpture highlights the abundance of the mental processes, which take place simultaneously in the library. The retrieval inquiries result in new collages of visuals of text and pictures, which form an aesthetic translation of the search procedure. The searched words, then, fill the pool of data at the ground of the stairway. Altogether the media installation poses questions about the function of the information in the age of the increasing communicational isolation. In regard to the title, the visitor literally passes through the world of knowledge.

The Total User Experience

Posted: 30 Nov 2011 12:01 AM PST

Designer Victor Johannson’s mobile phone concept focuses on ease of use by providing multiple input controls that the user can customize to their liking. Features like dual sided scrolling and volume control as well as side a back-side keyboard, clock, or place to dock apps are definitely bonuses. The coolest feature by far, however, is piezoelectric feedback technology that gives tactile signals in four different directions that makes it possible for the user to ‘feel’ the direction to travel.
