Captivating Cube

Posted: 28 Sep 2012 09:17 AM PDT

In designing the Urban Green Council’s EBIE Awards, designer Mark Pernice aimed for something beautifully simplistic, familiar but progressive, of the earth but ethereal, and organic in material but not in aesthetic. The result is this captivating cube. Though each award has the exact same shape and construction, they appear different depending on the viewer’s perception. The bioresin material was chosen for its affordability, soft smoky aesthetic and color variance which will change each year.

FILA X NOOKA by Matthew Waldman

Posted: 28 Sep 2012 05:00 AM PDT

Our boy Matt Waldman is doing big thangs y’all. Like for serious. His latest project is a collab with Fila on a capsule footwear collection sure to please all futurists. With an eye always towards the future, Matt figures there no better physical metaphor than our feet. They literally propel us physically into the future one step at a time – that is unless you find a wormhole because then you kinda just fall in and end up god knows where. Love this collection. Let me say that again, LOVE IT. As of now looks like it’s only available in Asia.

How Well Do You Rank?

Posted: 28 Sep 2012 04:26 AM PDT

The popular A’ Design Award has just announced their World Design Rankings of countries. The numbers were crunched based on the number of design awards won at international juried design competitions and awards. It comes as no surprise that USA claimed the top spot or that Hong-Kong, Italy, United Kingdom and South Korea, figure high up in the list.

As designers and journalists it is imperative that we keep an eye on the trends emerging in the market. World Design Rankings provide additional data and insights to where each country is placed on the charts. Explore the list and cheer for your country! Hurray!

On a side note, you can register until 30 September 2012, and see some winning designs here.

Break The Cooking ICE

Posted: 28 Sep 2012 04:11 AM PDT

ICE is the mix of a lamp, mood lighting and recipe database that can assist in making your cooking and dining experience even more delightful. The theme for this year's Electrolux Design Lab was to create appliances that enhance your cooking experience by livening your senses. The ICE adheres to this in many ways.

As the designer explains, "When placed above any cooking or dining area ICE can scan its surroundings and assist the user in creating the best meal to suit any occasion. ICE can scan ingredients you’ve already chosen to cook and give suggestions on meals that can be made from those ingredients. The user can also access a vast database of recipes and ICE will guide you every step of the way."

ICE is a 2012 Electrolux Design Lab Top Ten finalist entry.

Bejeweled And Bedazzled

The elegant PIPETTE is a beautiful functional jewelry that should be in every woman's collection. It features a pipette-shaped bottle that is filled with a gel perfume. Crafted from materials that make it bedazzling and sexy, I can't wait to get my hands on one of these.

Deceptively Simple

Posted: 28 Sep 2012 12:01 AM PDT

The unique construction of the Ane stool gives the illusion of intricate complexity, but don’t be fooled… the multiple solid timber pieces are actually all of one shape positioned and cut in a dynamic way that makes them look significantly different. Individual pieces appear to float on its powder coated black or white steel frame, enhancing its striking aesthetic as well as its structural integrity.

Autonomous Water Resource

Posted: 28 Sep 2012 12:01 AM PDT

Inspired by the natural occurrence of water condensing onto leaves, the Leaf system uses the same principle to collect dew before filtering and turning it into usable water. A solar powered thermoregulator ensures the surface temp is always below the dewpoint of the surrounding air, triggering drops to form and slide into the carbon/sand filtering layers located in the “stem.” Depending on humidity, the unit can collect up to 15 liters of water every day!
