Ben van Berkel’s UNStudio in combination with OR else Landscapes comes out on top as the winner of a competition for a proposed focal point of the new Baumkirchen Mitte development in Munich. The nearly 200-foot tall mixed use structure features 140,000 square feet of office space, as well as 60,000 square feet of contemporary apartments. As for the exterior, horizontal rings of balcony and outdoor space are complimented by a larger, multipurpose green area that takes advantage of the expansive roof space.

Neutral spaces, such as foyers, lobbies and meeting areas are used to establish the identity of the building. The design combines both zones that guarantee maximum flexibility for varying combinations of users and exclusively designed areas that provide spaces for communication and creativity.

Changing demands and expectations in contemporary living form the starting point for the residential areas within the design. Flexible accommodation types are incorporated which afford variable constellations and offer the possibility to combine adjacent units. In addition, flexible floor plans enable a variety of configurations in the apartment layouts, thereby directly addressing the specific and individual needs of the residents.

Outdoor spaces vary in scale and form an integral part of the apartments. The living experience is therefore not confined to the dwellings alone, but instead begins as you arrive at the building and enter the circulation areas. Thereafter it extends into shared and private outdoor spaces. This extension of the living concept stimulates interaction between residents and creates a balance between activated public spaces and the need for privacy.

The facade design reflects the duality of the program, with two contrasting materials defining the look and feel of the building. Bright metal forms the background, lending the structure a contemporary and light aesthetic, whilst the contrasting use of wood affords the building the appearance of a custom-made furniture piece for the urban space.

The remaining traces on the location of a previous rail yard form the blueprint for the structure of the roof gardens. The linear frameworks in the landscaping of the gardens accommodate fields of kitchen gardens and play areas, as well as rows of ornamental grasses and flowering perennials and are inspired by the spontaneous vegetation of the track fields. Through the integration of vegetable gardens, systems for rainwater harvesting, composting and beekeeping areas the roof garden becomes more than just a recreation area. Additionally, it plays an important ecological role by contributing to a sustainable living environment.

The Qua Effect

Posted: 25 Nov 2013 08:29 AM PST

Qua is a nightlight for children that exude a soothing effect thanks to its textured glass and looks. It even doubles up as a natural humidifier because of the water that you need to load in for the effect. The surreal effect of the rippled glass and water mimics the feeling of being comfortable in the womb, thus encouraging a peaceful night's sleep. Sweet!

Future Of Washing

Posted: 25 Nov 2013 08:20 AM PST

A trip down the isle of washing machines in an appliance store tells you that not much innovation has come about in the design language of these machines. Innova hopes to rectify this with its futuristic design language and innovative techniques. This washer-dryer concept uses only steam for cleaning, and consumes much less water compared to the current crop. Thanks to its ergonomic design, the drum of the machine is perched at an angle and gives a better view inside.

The extra-large transparent door and rear glass window give a very clear view of the cleaning process. The absence of a conventional interface only means that you need to use an app on your smart device to control it. The color of the feedback light in the door's inner ring indicates the stage of the cleaning process.

Features:

  • A pipe connector delivers water to Innova, which is converted to steam and pumped into the drum through nozzles during the washing cycle.
  • The steam cleans and sterilizes the fabric.
  • For the drying process, the drum is heated and the water that is vaporized from the fabric is released through the ventilation grills at the rear top part of the machine.
  • A detachable 'fragrance box' allows scent to be delivered into the drum during the process with the help of the steam.

Innova is 2013 red dot award: design concept winner.

Keep your sound to yourself!

Posted: 25 Nov 2013 12:36 AM PST

The OWN speaker was designed in response to the obtrusive nature of sounds in the increasingly loud urban world we live in. It goes beyond the limitations of directional speakers, using sound laser technology that works with an ultrasound transducer to pinpoint audio to the listener and the listener only. Working in tandem with your smartphone, it can be used as an alarm without disturbing others, in a pocket to play music as you walk down the street, and more. Do your OWN thing with this ultracompact portable speaker!

Say Hello to Urb

Urb-Garden brings gardening into small, indoor urban environments in a sculptural and aesthetic way! The unique form is actually the result of a design project focused around safety. Users will find that the pots are at an ergonomic height to prevent back strain and the materials used are thoughtfully chosen to be lightweight or heavy where it matters. Check out the vid to see an extra, interactive feature of this ingenious planter!

The team sought to bring the joy of gardening into indoor urban homes with limited outdoor space. Urb-Garden is a collection of modular pieces that fit together at the concrete bases, creating a continuous row of plants; specifically herbs; that could have as many or as little as the space and user saw fit. The design is minimal in form, however the construction techniques are significantly more complex. The bases and exterior pots are made of fibrous (fiberglass) concrete to ensure the best strength-to-weight ratio, while each stem is made from 8 steam-bent and laminated pieces of Ash which not only has high structural capacity but is also beautiful. As well as this, the weight of the pots allow the stem to gently bend and sway when the user interacts with the pieces which adds a dynamic element to the design. The inner pots, that house the herbs, are made from spun aluminium and are easily removable from the concrete pots. This allows the user to remove the pots at will and put them on their kitchen bench if desired. Urb-Garden is detailed by a red felt base and a red edge on the aluminium pots; a colour chosen to provide an effective contrast with the plants.
